UNC School of the Arts: Spring Dance 2024

Thursday, April 25, 2024
Doors | 6:30pm // Show | 7:30pm
$20 to $25
The School of Dance and the School of Music will collaborate on a spectacular Spring Dance event that will also serve as the final UNCSA Symphony Orchestra performance of the year.

Students from both the ballet and contemporary programs will perform, along with student musicians. The first half of the program will feature premieres by UNCSA alumni, including two premieres of contemporary dance by Peter Pucci (B.F.A. ‘81) and Trey McIntyre (H.S. Diploma ‘78), as well as a new ballet work by Jim Vincent (Dance ’78).

After intermission, the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra will perform Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, which was inspired by mid-18th century promenade concerts held in London that included acrobatics, street entertainers, dancers, fireworks and masquerades.

Stravinsky’s dazzling The Firebird, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes 1910 Paris season with original choreography by Michel Fokine, will conclude the program. The ballet will be set in a Caribbean environment where the magical firebird brings about a fairytale ending, with good triumphing over evil and promising a happily-ever-after. Music faculty member Mark A. Norman will conduct the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra.

Sponsored, in part, by the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts.
